Bamboo Flooring Guide
Bamboo Flooring is a great eco-friendly flooring product… Here’s the scoop…
It is a very durable product that has been used for thousands of years for
many different products from tools to flooring to whole houses and just about
everything in-between.
It takes only 5 or 6 years to replenish a Bamboo forest compared to 50 years
for an Oak tree… so it's sustainable!
The Forest
The quality starts with the forest… Almost all commercial bamboo comes
from Asia… mostly from China…
The region in Asia where the forest is located can make a huge difference in
the quality of the Stalks.
The Harvest
The next factor is the time of year the stalks are harvested. Stalks harvested
during the rainy season may result in a defective product that will split apart
if installed in a much dryer climate.
Construction
Manufacture equipment and materials play the next critical role in the quality
of Bamboo products.
The adhesives used to join the strips into boards or planks can make a big difference.
Some of the cheaper quality manufacturers may cut corners in the quality by diluting
the adhesive with too much water. The high water content may cause bacteria to grow. These bacteria
may cause the adhesive bond to fail. Other manufacturers use adhesives which may contain
very high levels of Formaldehyde… a cancer-causing chemical.
The milling equipment and how it’s maintained can make a difference in how nicely the boards
fit together during installation.
Finally, the finish can make the difference between a beautiful, long lasting
Product and one that will fall apart soon after installation. A high gloss UV
finish looks great but scratches will soon show on the surface. The matte
finish such as Aluminum Oxide is durable and will look new longer than most
other finishes.
Styles
The most common Bamboo Flooring styles are Horizontal and Vertical. There is a new style
called Woven that is very beautiful and unique and has twice the density of
traditional which means it will look new much longer.
Colors
Bamboo is now available in a wide variety of stained colors and standard colors.
Natural- The beautiful natural color is similar to a rich creamy vanilla ice cream.
Carbonized- The rich color is achieved by baking the strands in an oven. The result
is a beautiful caramel-like color. Carbonized is the most popular color.
Applications
Commercial- I’ve seen Bamboo Flooring in properties such as restaurants,
boutique shops, department stores, hair salons, and offices.
Residential- If you are doing a kitchen remodel or a bath remodel then
Bamboo Flooring is a great way to go but can be used anywhere in the house
including the staircase.
Prices
If you are going green and want to use quality materials, stay away
from the garbage that the big box grocers and home centers sell for $1.99 per square
foot. It’s not worth 25 cents. If it sounds too good to be true… Good quality
will run you from $3.49 to $4.99 per square foot for standard and $5.99
to $6.99 for woven. For high quality Non-Formaldehyde Bamboo Flooring plan
on around $6.99 to $10.99.
