TRADITIONAL CARPET STORES vs. DISCOUNT CARPET STORES

THE TRADITIONAL CARPET STORE

Some stores advertise that they are a discount carpet store but they are actually a Traditional Carpet store (unlike true Discount Carpet warehouse stores) are known as "Sample Stores". These stores have 10,000 or more samples of carpet that you can look through. Some of these traditional stores will let you check out samples to take home. These are storefronts on major streets with glass windows on the front, lit signage and no warehouse or at least no visible warehouse with customer access. These stores are neat and tidy and often fancy.

Customers are greeted by a salesperson wearing a shirt and tie (often in a 3-piece suit). Some of these people act like they are doing you a favor by being there and can be snobby at times. Customers select a carpet from a tiny useless sample, the salesperson goes to your home and measures and gives you a price all inclusive of installation.

The price includes the wholesale cost of the carpet, padding and installation plus profit of around 40%. These are not Discount Carpet Stores. No matter what the advertisement says or your coupon says, you are paying RETAIL at these places.

Since the carpet is not in stock, the materials are special ordered. When the materials arrive (often weeks later), installation is scheduled.

The Discount Carpet Store

Discount Carpet stores are much different. When you drive up you know immediately that you are at a Discount Carpet Warehouse. No fancy storefront, just a warehouse (possibly clean). You are greeted by a salesperson wearing jeans (with or without holes) and a t-shirt (possibly clean).

Discount Carpet Warehouses are wholesale only stores or "wholesale to the public" that purchase one-of-a-kind Carpet Remnants, Roll balances and rolls of Carpet Closeouts, Discontinued Carpet, Over-stocked Carpet, and Carpet Seconds from the manufacturer at a greatly reduced price and then passes the savings on to their customers. True Discount Carpet.

Those customers know to do some easy legwork (Like measuring the rooms and calling a independent carpet installer recommended by the discount carpet store) and bring in their room measurements to save a lot of money (often paying less than Wholesale cost).

The carpet is in stock right now and ready for immediate installation. These discounters don't have samples to loan out so if you want to match you must bring in your paint and fabric swatches etc. to the warehouse.

Since they are wholesale only, they do not provide installation however they will be able to refer you to a qualified independent carpet installer. The installer will pick up your carpet and padding for you, deliver and install for a lower price and you pay the installer directly AFTER the installation is completed.

How Long will my new Discount Carpet Look New?

* In the U.S., Carpet is replaced on average every 7 years. Some places like California carpet replacement is much less. Here is a fact to consider. The cheapest crap carpet on the planet will be fully intact at the landfill 1000 years from now. This is not an exaggeration. Yet, that same carpet, (if installed in a high traffic area) will look terrible after only one month.
