Going Green with Bamboo Flooring and other Eco-Friendly Options
Okay… you decided to change the Flooring… Now what? Here are some important questions you need to ask yourself:
• What is the style of the home? Is it Spanish, Country, Contemporary, Mediterranean or?
• Is the subfloor concrete or plywood?
• Will the walls be painted or wallpapered and what colors do you have in mind?
• Have you selected your furniture?
• Keep in mind the lifestyle of the people in the household… Do you have pets, children?
• Do you want to make a particular statement to your friends, neighbors, associates?
• How soon do you want to complete your project?
• Which type of floor do you have now?
• Everything has pro’s and con’s. What are your likes and dislikes about the existing floor? (You don’t want to make the same mistakes…right?)
Flooring can be one of the most costly but rewarding decorating projects. This page is about my quest to find (and share with you!) the answers to these questions and many more. I will show you how to go green by using eco-friendly alternatives without changing your lifestyle or going broke.
Once you have the answers to those questions we can dig deeper and talk about traditional products vs. eco-friendly Choices and the pro’s and con’s of each.

Hardwood Flooring
Does Hardwood mean cutting down rain forests? There is nothing like the look and beauty of a real hardwood floor. A good quality hardwood will last the lifetime of your home. Currently there is an over saturation of products on the market that is made irresponsibly. Illegal clear-cutting practices are rampant in this industry resulting in cheap and poorly made product. Be very careful! Quality manufacturers get their lumber from responsibly managed forests. These logging techniques leave most of the forest and eco-system intact so the forest will survive and thrive in the future. The Forest Stewardship Council certifies manufacturers who qualify, however, to be certain, ask to see a copy of the invoice and check that the material is FSC certified. Once the manufacturer has the eco-responsible raw lumber… what they do with it is another story… Most of the inexpensive products on the market are poorly made with adhesives which contain high levels of formaldehyde… a cancer-causing chemical. If you are going green you want an FSC certified engineered product made with non-toxic adhesives like Eco-Timber.
