There are a lot of so-called eco-friendly paints on the market right now including some that advertise “Zero VOC”… no volatile organic compounds but you can have a paint that has zero VOC’s that is loaded with cancer-causing chemicals… That can be a little misleading. So you want to find a paint that is Zero VOC and non-toxic.
When comparing prices of traditional paint vs. eco-friendly it’s important to consider the possibility that the less expensive and lower quality paints may require 3 or 4 coats of paint. This results in a much greater cost and takes much more time and labor. Quality is always the best investment in the long run because you have more time in-between re-painting because the high quality lasts much longer. Get the best quality paint that is safe for pets, people, and the earth.
Once you have a quality brand of Zero Voc and Non-Toxic paint, your next challenge is to find a brand that has non-toxic colorants. In other words…your salesperson sells you a non-toxic paint. But when your color is mixed, he/she may use a low Voc colorant which contaminates your paint with cancer-causing chemicals. Also make sure the primers are truly non-toxic and you are covered.
There are several brands of low VOC paint on the market but why would I recommend a brand that only has fewer cancer-causing chemicals?
